Things to Do in Fuerteventura

Known for its kilometres of white sand and turquoise beaches, Fuerteventura is one of the most underrated destinations in the Canary Islands. Located in the Atlantic Ocean, it is the second-largest island in the archipelago, just behind Tenerife.

Fuerteventura enjoys great weather all year round. So if you’re looking for a place to relax and enjoy the sea and sunshine, this island is an ideal choice. Unlike more mountainous islands such as Tenerife or Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura stands out for its open, arid landscapes and endless beaches.

Declared a Biosphere Reserve in 2009, Fuerteventura will surprise you with its peaceful atmosphere, its people and its local food. Home to some of the best beaches in the Canary Islands, welcome to this top 10 of must-see places in Fuerteventura.

1. Parque Natural de las Dunas de Corralejo

The Parque Natural de las Dunas de Corralejo is one of the most beautiful landscapes to see in Fuerteventura. The contrast between the white sand, the turquoise ocean and the desert surroundings creates the island’s most iconic postcard view.

If you’re visiting Fuerteventura by car, this spectacular spot is a must. The delicate, fine white sand dunes line the road and form another of the island’s unforgettable landscapes.

Beyond its visual appeal, it’s also a protected natural area, which I include in this 4-day Fuerteventura itinerary, where you’ll find paradise beaches and truly impressive places.

2. Islote de Lobos

Visiting Isla de Lobos from Corralejo is one of the best excursions to do in Fuerteventura. Located just off the island’s north coast, it’s an almost untouched place.

To get there, the best option is to book this speedboat, which includes return transport. The journey is short and very pleasant, so you can easily spend half a day or a full day on the island. As it’s a protected area, access is limited and regulated.

Once there, you can enjoy the calm sea, walk along the marked trails or head up to the lighthouse. If you’re looking to disconnect and enjoy a peaceful boat experience, Isla de Lobos is waiting for you.

3. Playa de Cofete

Looking for one of the best beaches in Fuerteventura? Playa de Cofete, located on the Jandía peninsula, is another of the island’s must-see places.

With kilometres of endless sand and a mountain range in the background, it’s perfect for relaxing and soaking up the sun. Even in high season, as it’s far from the main tourist areas, it’s usually quiet and uncrowded.

To get there, you’ll need to drive from Morro Jable along a dirt road. To make the journey more enjoyable and turn it into an experience in itself, you can book this jeep excursion. I promise it’s well worth it.

4. Betancuria

Betancuria was the island’s first capital. Located inland, in a dry and reddish landscape surrounded by ravines, it’s listed among the most beautiful villages in Spain and is one of the must-see places in Fuerteventura.

Its historic centre features cobbled streets, traditional architecture and buildings of great cultural value. Without a doubt, it’s a stop you shouldn’t miss on a route through inland Fuerteventura.

Although it’s not one of the most touristy places, if you decide to visit Betancuria, it’s worth combining it with other nearby spots. Exploring the island’s interior offers a completely different perspective.

5. Cuevas de Ajuy

Located on the island’s west coast, the Cuevas de Ajuy stand out for their geological and palaeontological value. Considered one of the oldest areas in the Canary Islands, they’re another great place to see in Fuerteventura.

These sea caves were formed by lava flows hitting the cliffs and are now protected as a Natural Monument of great scientific interest.

You can reach them via a short coastal path from the village of Ajuy. So if you’re visiting Betancuria, it’s easy to include the caves on the same day.

6. Playa de Sotavento

Located in the south of Fuerteventura, Playa de Sotavento is one of the longest beaches on the island. Its size and open surroundings make it instantly recognisable.

Do you enjoy photography as much as I do? Then you can’t leave Fuerteventura without visiting this magical place. The natural lagoons that form with the tides create a constantly changing landscape of sand, water and wind.

Thanks to the local weather conditions, it’s an international hotspot for kitesurfing and windsurfing. And if you’d rather just walk, take photos and enjoy the scenery, it’s also the perfect place to slow down and disconnect.

7. El Cotillo

El Cotillo is a small coastal village in the north of Fuerteventura, known for its relaxed atmosphere and close connection to the sea. It’s a regular stop on island routes.

Nearby, you’ll find coves and beaches with calmer waters, such as Playa de la Concha, which has become very popular on social media.

As it’s also an area with less wind, it’s ideal for diving and snorkelling. So take advantage and book this experience.

8. Montaña de Tindaya

Montaña de Tindaya is one of the most recognisable landmarks to see in Fuerteventura. Made of granite, it stands out in the arid surroundings of the island’s north.

It holds great cultural and spiritual importance for the island’s original inhabitants, the Guanches, as valuable rock engravings have been found on its slopes.

Although climbing to the summit is not allowed, you can admire the mountain from the village of the same name and from its base, where you’ll find large white letters — perfect for a photo.

9. Faro de la Entallada

Faro de la Entallada is known for having one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the island. Set high above the Atlantic Ocean, it’s another essential place to see in Fuerteventura.

To reach the lighthouse, you’ll drive along a little-used road, which only adds to the feeling of isolation and tranquillity.

Thanks to the wide views and natural surroundings, it’s one of the best places to enjoy sunrise or sunset.

10. Calderón Hondo

In the north of the island, you’ll find Calderón Hondo, one of the best-preserved and most accessible volcanoes to see in Fuerteventura.

It has an easy hiking trail that takes you right to the edge of the crater, making it ideal even if you don’t have much hiking experience.

From the top, you’ll enjoy views of the volcanic landscape and the surrounding area. Just keep in mind that, although it’s an easy route, it’s best to avoid the hottest hours of the day.

If you’re looking for something a bit different, you can book this night hike to Calderón Hondo, where you’ll walk with an expert guide under the starry Canary Islands sky.

In conclusion

In conclusion, if I had to recommend one place to truly switch off and enjoy dream-like beaches, it would definitely be Fuerteventura. This island really has it all.

And while it may not be the best island in the Canary archipelago if you’re more interested in charming villages or monuments, Fuerteventura is home to the wildest natural landscapes in the Canary Islands.

If you’re planning a trip around the Canary Islands, combining Fuerteventura with Tenerife, Gran Canaria or Lanzarote is one of the best ways to experience very different landscapes within the same archipelago.
