Things to Do in Tenerife
Known as “the island of eternal spring”, Tenerife is a volcanic island in the Atlantic. With pleasant temperatures all year round, there really is no bad time to visit Tenerife. Even in the colder months, you can still enjoy the beaches in the south.
In the shadow of Teide, the island of Tenerife hides an incredible variety of landscapes. That’s why I recommend spending a full week exploring it. To make the most of your time, the best option is to stay half the week in the north and the other half in the south.
Visiting Tenerife means relaxing on golden beaches, wandering through ancient laurel forests and strolling around historic towns. This mix of places and experiences is one of the reasons why you’ll fall in love with Tenerife and want to come back again.
1. Parque Nacional del Teide
Did you know that Teide is the highest peak in Spain? Standing at 3,718 metres and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s one of the must-see places in Tenerife.
Located right in the centre of the island, Parque Nacional del Teide is easy to reach by road from both the north and the south. One of the best experiences here is taking the cable car — trust me, the views will absolutely blow you away.
Along the way, you’ll spot unique endemic plant life, such as the red tajinaste or the Teide violet. Don’t forget to bring a jacket, even in summer, as temperatures drop the higher you go.
2. Acantilados de Los Gigantes
Love adventure and looking for something different to do in Tenerife? Rising over 600 metres above the sea, the Acantilados de Los Gigantes are one of the most spectacular spots on the island.
From here, you can enjoy dreamy sunsets from viewpoints like Archipenque, or experience the cliffs from the water with kayak excursions.
And if that wasn’t enough, this area is also famous for whale and dolphin watching tours, one of the best activities you can do in Tenerife.
3. Parque Rural de Anaga
Into hiking? Then Parque Rural de Anaga is for you. This laurel forest, a true relic from the Tertiary period, has been declared a Biosphere Reserve.
With a wide network of signposted trails, you’ll discover some of the greenest and most authentic landscapes in Tenerife. It’s the complete opposite of the touristy south and the volcanic scenery around Teide.
I recommend wearing comfortable shoes, bringing water, and checking the weather before tackling longer routes, as rain is quite common here.
4. San Cristóbal de La Laguna
San Cristóbal de La Laguna served as the urban planning model for many of the first cities built in Latin America. For this reason, its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
As a university city, it has a young, local vibe, along with a great cultural and food scene, making it another must-see place in Tenerife.
Thanks to its higher altitude, it enjoys a cooler and more humid climate, which is especially welcome during the summer months.
5. Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Famous for hosting one of the most important carnivals in the world, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the island’s capital.
Its most iconic landmark is the Auditorio, designed by Santiago Calatrava, now a symbol of contemporary architecture. The city also stands out for the Mercado de África, the Carnival Museum and its seaside promenade.
Located close to several places on this top 10 list of things to see in Tenerife, such as Las Teresitas beach, Anaga and La Laguna, there’s really no excuse not to visit.

6. Playa de Las Teresitas
Las Teresitas is a calm beach with golden sand brought from the Sahara, perfect for switching off and relaxing.
Located in the village of San Andrés, it stretches for around one and a half kilometres. You’ll find beach bars, facilities and plenty of free parking, although it’s best to arrive early to secure a spot.
If you fancy a view from above like the one in the photo below, don’t miss the viewpoint. It’s one of the best places for photos in Tenerife.
7. Garachico
Garachico is one of the prettiest towns to visit in Tenerife. After being almost completely destroyed by the volcanic eruption of 1706, the town was rebuilt and today boasts a charming historic centre.
One of its main highlights is the natural pools of El Caletón, created when lava met the sea. Go for a dip if the sea is calm — it’s an unforgettable experience.
For centuries, Garachico was the most important port in Tenerife, something you can still see today in its architecture, convents and old manor houses.
8. La Orotava
From the Valle de La Orotava, you’ll enjoy some of the best views of Teide, especially on clear days. Its historic centre is listed as a Historic-Artistic Site.
As well as visiting the famous Casa de los Balcones, one of the top things to do in Tenerife, you’ll also find places like the Jardines Victoria, with stepped terraces offering beautiful views over the valley.
La Orotava is also well known for its flower and volcanic sand carpets, created during the Corpus Christi celebrations.
9. Masca
Often referred to as the Spanish Machu Picchu, Masca is a tiny hamlet located in Parque Rural de Teno, surrounded by dramatic ravines and mountains.
Although getting there isn’t easy, it’s absolutely worth the effort and easily one of the most postcard-worthy places in Tenerife. Discover the Masca Gorge trail by joining this guided hike.
My advice? Go early in the morning — you’ll be rewarded with one of the most beautiful sunrises you’ll ever see.
10. Icod de los Vinos
Home to the legendary Drago Milenario, Icod de los Vinos is another great town to include on your Tenerife itinerary. This dragon tree, declared a National Monument, is over 800 years old and one of the most important natural symbols of the Canary Islands.
As well as visiting the Parque del Drago, Icod is known for its wine-making tradition, which gives the town its name. Nearby, you’ll also find Cueva del Viento, one of the longest volcanic tubes in the world.
In under two hours, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the town, visit the Drago Botanical Garden and enjoy views over the north of the island.
