Things to Do in Puerto de la Cruz
1. Puerto de la Cruz Botanical Garden
Start your day at the Botanical Garden of Puerto de la Cruz. Also known as the Jardín de Aclimatación de La Orotava or simply El Botánico, this is a must-see in the area.
Created in 1788 under King Carlos III’s orders to acclimatize exotic plants from the colonies before transferring them to Madrid and Aranjuez, it became Spain’s second botanical garden and the oldest in the Canary Islands. Later, King Carlos IV continued its expansion.
Today, it’s a lovely place filled with a variety of trees and plants. It’s easy to explore in about an hour and is a must-visit if you’re in Puerto de la Cruz. If you love parks, check out the Palmetum in Santa Cruz de Tenerife too.

2. San Amaro Church
Near the Mirador de la Paz and a short walk from the Botanical Garden, you’ll find the San Amaro Church. Built in 1591, it’s the oldest religious building in Puerto de la Cruz.
Constructed by local residents, it became a pilgrimage site, and every January 15th, the San Amaro Romería is celebrated here.
Inside the single-nave church, you’ll see the statue of San Amaro, a carving of Our Lady of Peace, and several 18th-century Mexican paintings.
3. La Paz Lookout
Another unmissable spot is the La Paz Lookout. From here, enjoy stunning views of Lake Martiánez and the vast Atlantic Ocean. On clear days, you might even spot the island of La Palma in the distance.
This area has plenty of nearby bars and restaurants, and the plaza honors Agatha Christie, inspired by her book *The Mysterious Mr. Quin*. It’s a serene spot to admire the sea.
For walkers, this is also the start of the Coastal Trail, which leads to some of Tenerife’s best beaches: El Bollullo, Los Patos, and El Ancón.
4. Camino de las Cabras
On your way to the next stop, you’ll come across stairs featuring quotes from Agatha Christie’s books. Known as the “Goat Path”, it’s one of the prettiest photo spots in Puerto de la Cruz.
Tip: Be cautious of people with parrots who may try to sell you photos.
5. Paseo de Las Palmeras
This popular avenue, about 300 meters long, leads to the final stretch of the Martiánez ravine. Built in 1916, the Avenida Aguilar y Quesada connects directly to our next destination: Martiánez Beach.
6. Martiánez Beach
Martiánez Beach is located next to the lake of the same name, bordered by 50-meter-high cliffs. Perfect for surfing enthusiasts, it features 300 meters of black sand. If you enjoy water sports, this is the place for you!
7. Lake Martiánez
Designed by Lanzarote artist César Manrique, Lake Martiánez transformed the city’s tourism in the 1970s. Spanning over 100,000 square meters, it’s one of the top attractions in Puerto de la Cruz.
This artificial lake, recognized as a Site of Cultural Interest, features 33,000 square meters of saltwater and small islands with sculptures like “Los Alisios” and “La Jibia.”
It’s a great place to relax, much like the Maritime Park in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Don’t linger too long, though—there’s still plenty to see!

- General: €5.50 (includes a sunbed)
- Children under 10: €2.50
- Discounts available for residents of Puerto de la Cruz and multi-entry passes.

8. San Telmo Beach and Chapel
The San Telmo Chapel, built in 1780, is a charming white church located just steps away from the Lake Martiánez, along the coastal path of Puerto de la Cruz.
Inside, you’ll find a beautifully carved wooden ceiling with geometric patterns and a 17th-century altarpiece featuring San Telmo, the patron saint of sailors.
Situated in the square of the same name, the chapel offers amazing views of San Telmo Beach, a great spot for swimming, especially at low tide.
9. Church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia
The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia is the most important religious building in Puerto de la Cruz. Located in the heart of the town’s historic center, it is home to the city’s patron saint, Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
Built in 1684 on the site of a former chapel, the church has been expanded and remodeled over the years. In 1898, the iconic tower was added, which you can admire from the Plaza del Charco, right at the entrance. Inside, you’ll find the “Great Power of God” altarpiece with paintings by local artist Luis de la Cruz y Ríos and an 18th-century baroque-style main altar.
10. San Felipe Castle
Next up is the San Felipe Castle, built in 1604 to protect the city from pirate attacks. Visiting this historic spot is one of the top things to do in Puerto de la Cruz. Located next to Playa Jardín, it’s a fantastic place to catch one of Tenerife’s most stunning sunsets.
Over the years, the castle has served as a restaurant, infirmary, and shooting society. Today, while it’s often closed, it hosts cultural events and art exhibitions when open.
11. Playa Jardín
Our journey through Puerto de la Cruz ends here. Personally, Playa Jardín is one of my favorite beaches in Tenerife. Made up of Playa del Castillo, Playa del Charcón, and Playa de Punta Brava, it’s perfect for a refreshing swim before continuing your Tenerife adventure.
What makes it stand out are its facilities, including restrooms, bars, lifeguards, and sunbeds. On a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of the Teide in the background.
12. Loro Parque Zoo
Loro Parque is a must-see if you love animals. Plan to spend at least 4–5 hours here—or better yet, dedicate an entire day. You could visit the park in the morning and explore the city in the afternoon. Upon entry, you’ll receive a map with activity schedules to guide your visit.
The park is famous for its dolphin, orca, and sea lion shows. It also boasts one of the world’s largest aviaries, housing an impressive variety of parrot species. Don’t miss the climate-controlled area with a large penguin colony, the aquarium featuring a shark tunnel, and beautifully landscaped gardens filled with tropical plants.
Loro Parque actively participates in conservation programs and breeding endangered species, making it a rewarding visit.
