Things to Do in Lanzarote

Lanzarote is an island shaped by more than 140 volcanoes, where lava has sculpted landscapes that look nothing like anywhere else you may have visited before. It’s an island where nature and art come together thanks to the vision of a true genius, César Manrique.

Located in the Canary Islands, less than 150 kilometres from the African continent, Lanzarote enjoys mild temperatures that make it ideal to visit at any time of year. Known as “the different island”, with fascinating underwater landscapes, it also lies just a few kilometres from La Graciosa, so I’d highly recommend setting aside at least one day to visit it.

Visiting Lanzarote means discovering an island full of places so beautiful that you’ll feel like taking photos everywhere you go. And although it’s possible to get around by guagua (local bus), just like on the rest of the Canary Islands, I’d really recommend hiring a car and forgetting about timetables.

1. Parque Nacional de Timanfaya

Did you know that right in the heart of Parque Nacional de Timanfaya you’ll find one of the most spectacular volcanic landscapes on the island? The Montañas de Fuego (Fire Mountains) are, without a doubt, one of the must-see places in Lanzarote.

Your ticket includes the famous Ruta de los Volcanes, which you’ll do by guagua while listening to explanations in several languages and stopping at the most striking points along the route. As an extra tip, try to arrive early in the morning to avoid queues, especially during high season.

Even if you visit the park in summer, it’s a good idea to bring a light jacket, as the wind can be surprisingly strong. Inside the park you’ll also find the El Diablo restaurant, famous for cooking its dishes using the natural heat that rises from the volcano.

2. Jameos del Agua

Located inside a volcanic tunnel created by the eruptions of the Volcán de La Corona, Jameos del Agua is one of the most beautiful natural and artistic spaces to visit in Lanzarote. Inside, you’ll find a stunning natural lagoon formed by seawater seepage, home to unique local wildlife.

Beyond its natural value, this place really stands out for the perfect blend of art and landscape. Highlights include a natural auditorium carved into the volcanic rock, turning it into a true oasis in the middle of the island’s arid terrain.

To make the most of your visit, it’s best to go early in the day. You’ll avoid the busiest hours and still have time to complete the experience with a visit to the Casa de los Volcanes, a small but very interesting interpretation centre.

3. Cueva de los Verdes

Another impressive cave to visit in Lanzarote is Cueva de los Verdes. Just like Jameos del Agua, it also begins inside the Volcán de La Corona and forms part of one of the longest volcanic tunnels on the planet.

Visits are guided and last around one hour, so I’d recommend planning ahead and booking your ticket in advance during high season, such as summer.

Extra tip: to make the most of your trip to the north of the island, it’s a great idea to visit Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua on the same day.

4. Mirador del Río

Standing 474 metres above sea level, Mirador del Río is a unique building perfectly integrated into the Risco de Famara cliffs.

From here, you’ll enjoy one of the best panoramic views of the Archipiélago Chinijo and the island of La Graciosa. So don’t forget to add it to your list of things to do in Lanzarote.

While the viewpoint is lovely at any time of day, the light at sunset is pure magic, so if you can, that’s the best moment to visit.

5. La Geria

La Geria is a wine-growing landscape unlike anywhere else in the world, shaped by the incredible way local farmers adapted to the volcanic terrain after the eruptions that transformed the island.

This unique environment produces the well-known Malvasía Volcánica wines, prized for their quality and character. The best way to explore the area is by visiting a few wineries, where you can discover the different flavours and nuances of this very special type of cultivation.

To round off the experience, this guided tour is ideal for understanding the traditional farming system and the huge effort involved in working these volcanic lands.

6. Fundación César Manrique

Fundación César Manrique is essential for understanding Lanzarote’s cultural and aesthetic identity. It reflects the artist’s philosophy, based on blending art with the island’s volcanic nature.

To understand Lanzarote is to understand Manrique. Here are some of his key works you shouldn’t miss on a first visit to the island: Jameos del Agua, Mirador del Río, Jardín de Cactus and the Museo LagOmar.

7. Caldera Blanca

Looking for one of the best routes for hiking in Lanzarote? Caldera Blanca is one of the most accessible volcanoes in the Timanfaya area.

On this walk, you’ll cross lava fields and peer right into the crater itself. So don’t forget comfortable shoes, plenty of water, and try to avoid the hottest hours of the day.

If you love volcanic landscapes, Lanzarote isn’t the only island that will surprise you. On Tenerife, you can also visit Teide, the highest peak in Spain.

8. Charco de los Clicos

Love photography? Charco de los Clicos, next to the village of El Golfo, is one of the most photographed landscapes in Lanzarote, thanks to the contrast between the green lagoon, black volcanic sand and the sea.

You can only admire it from a viewpoint, as direct access is restricted. And although it’s beautiful at any time of day, sunset is especially impressive.

If you’re feeling hungry, you’re also in one of the best areas for eating in Lanzarote. Take the chance to try some fried fish in one of the local restaurants in the village.

9. Caleta de Famara

Set at the foot of the Risco de Famara, Caleta de Famara is a wild beach and a must place to visit in Lanzarote, famous for its constant wind and the dramatic scenery that surrounds it.

It’s also one of the best spots on the island for surfing and other water sports such as windsurfing, thanks to its wind and wave conditions.

But if there’s one thing Caleta de Famara is truly known for, it’s its dreamy sunsets. Watching the sun disappear behind the cliffs, painting the sky in golden and red tones, is simply stunning.

10. La Graciosa

Seen it all and looking for something different to do in Lanzarote? Then you really can’t leave without visiting La Graciosa, known as “the eighth island”. This small paradise forms part of the Archipiélago Chinijo, the largest marine reserve in Europe.

With just around 600 residents and no paved roads, La Graciosa has kept its calm and authentic feel. Its golden sandy beaches are stunning, the locals are incredibly friendly, and the feeling of having an island almost to yourself is very real.

To visit from Lanzarote, you’ll need to head to the village of Órzola and book this ferry, which takes around half an hour. There are several daily sailings that allow you to go and return on the same day, although staying at least one night is ideal. Once on the island, the best way to get around is by bike or 4×4 taxi.

In conclusion

This top 10 list of places to visit in Lanzarote makes it clear that the island is perfect whether you’re travelling with family, friends or on your own. It’s a destination that awakens the senses, far from big cities and grand monuments.

The contrast between black volcanic rock and the blue sea, along with deep red sunsets, will stay with you long after you leave. And the roads that cut through almost unreal landscapes may make you feel like you’re on Mars or even the Moon.

The island reveals itself in an unexpected viewpoint or a paradise beach all to yourself. As a final tip, plan just enough, leave room for spontaneity and enjoy Lanzarote at your own pace.

If you’re still keen for more, other islands such as Tenerife or Gran Canaria complete the perfect Canary Islands escape.
