Things to Do in Tenerife
Tenerife is so much more than just sun and beaches. It’s a land of contrasts.
In a single day, you can climb the highest mountain in Spain, wander through ancient laurel forests, discover charming whitewashed villages, and end the day watching the sunset by the sea.
1. Parque Nacional del Teide
Did you know that Teide is the highest peak in Spain? Standing at 3,718 metres and recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s one of the absolute must-see places in Tenerife.
Located right in the centre of the island, Parque Nacional del Teide is easily accessible by road from both the north and the south. And if you want to take the experience even further, you can go all the way up towards the summit by cable car.
Along the way, you’ll be able to admire its unique endemic flora, such as the red tajinaste or the Teide violet, as well as the dramatic volcanic landscapes that shape the island.
Below, I’ve left you a link to book a day trip to visit Teide.
2. Acantilados de Los Gigantes
Do you enjoy a bit of adventure and fancy something different to do in Tenerife? Rising over 600 metres high, the Acantilados de los Gigantes are one of the most beautiful spots on the island.
You can enjoy truly magical sunsets from scenic viewpoints, or even from the sea by joining one of the kayaking excursions.
And if you’re still keen for more, you can also go on whale and dolphin watching trips.
3. Parque Rural de Anaga
Do you enjoy hiking? Then the Parque Rural de Anaga is right up your street. This ancient laurel forest, a true relic from the Tertiary period, has been declared a Biosphere Reserve.
With an extensive network of well-marked trails, you’ll discover some of the greenest landscapes on the island.
This natural contrast with the touristy south and the volcanic scenery of Teide makes it one of the must-see places in Tenerife.
4. San Cristóbal de La Laguna
San Cristóbal de La Laguna was the model used to design the first cities in Latin America.
Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it boasts the best-preserved and most beautiful historic centre in Tenerife.
It’s one of the must-see places in Tenerife, thanks to its cobbled streets, lively university atmosphere and plenty of great places to eat. That said, it’s fair to say you can eat very well all over the island.
5. Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Famous for hosting one of the most important carnivals in the world, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a city you simply can’t miss if you’re planning to visit Tenerife.
Designed by Santiago Calatrava, its iconic white auditorium is a modern landmark of the capital and is now used for concerts and major events.

6. Playa de Las Teresitas
Looking for a peaceful beach with golden sand? Playa de Las Teresitas is just the place.
A fun fact: its sand was imported from the Sahara, and it’s the best-known urban beach in the north of the island.
Located in the village of San Andrés, it stretches for around a mile and a half and offers beach bars and parking. That said, I’d recommend arriving early so you don’t struggle to find a parking space.
There’s also a viewpoint above the beach where you can snap one of the most beautiful photos in Tenerife.
7. Garachico
One of the most beautiful villages to see in Tenerife is Garachico. After being destroyed by a volcanic eruption, the town rose again, and the stunning natural pools of El Caletón were formed.
Without a doubt, it’s one of the must-see places in Tenerife if you’re planning to visit the island.
8. La Orotava
From the Orotava Valley, you’ll enjoy incredible views of Teide. It’s one of the prettiest areas in northern Tenerife and is home to the Casa de los Balcones, where you can step inside a traditional Canarian house.
It’s one part of the island I definitely wouldn’t miss if you’re planning to visit Tenerife in one week.

9. Masca
Often referred to as the Spanish Machu Picchu, Masca is a tiny hamlet tucked away between dramatic ravines.
It’s one of the most iconic postcard views of Tenerife, although getting there isn’t easy. Access is limited, and you currently need to book a ticket in advance, whether you’re arriving by bus or by car.
My advice? Get up early — you’ll be rewarded with one of the most beautiful sunrises you’re ever likely to see.
10. Icod de los Vinos
Home to the legendary Drago Milenario, Icod de los Vinos is another of the must-visit towns in northern Tenerife.
You’ll only need around two hours to explore the town and visit the Botanical Garden, where you can learn more about the history of this iconic tree, so important to Canarian culture.
Stroll through its whitewashed streets and snap a few photos with a stunning natural backdrop.
