1. Puerto de la Cruz Botanical Garden

Start your day at the Puerto de la Cruz Botanical Garden, also known as the Jardín de Aclimatación de La Orotava or simply El Botánico. It’s the first stop I recommend when exploring Puerto de la Cruz.

The garden was created in 1788 by order of Carlos III, who asked scientists in the colonies to gather exotic plants and help them adapt to the climate in Puerto de la Cruz before sending them to Madrid and Aranjuez. This made it the second oldest botanical garden in Spain and the oldest in the Canary Islands. A few years later, Carlos IV continued the project.

Today, it’s a beautiful and peaceful place, full of trees and plants from all over the world. In my opinion, it’s absolutely worth a visit. You can see it all in about an hour, and it’s definitely one of the must-see spots in Puerto de la Cruz. If you enjoy gardens, I also recommend the Palmetum in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

2. San Amaro Parish Church

Right across from the Mirador de la Paz, and just a short walk from the Botanical Garden, you’ll find the San Amaro Parish Church. Built in 1591, it’s the oldest religious building in Puerto de la Cruz.

It was built by local residents and quickly became a pilgrimage site. Since then, the San Amaro pilgrimage has been celebrated every year on 15 January.

Inside the simple, single-nave church, you’ll find a statue of San Amaro, an image of Our Lady of Peace, and several 18th-century Mexican paintings.

3. La Paz Viewpoint

Next on our route is the stunning La Paz Viewpoint (Mirador de La Paz), a must-visit for anyone wanting a great view of Puerto de la Cruz from above. From here, you’ll get one of the best views of Lago Martiánez and the vast Atlantic Ocean. On a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of La Palma in the distance.

The viewpoint is surrounded by bars and restaurants. The square itself is named after Agatha Christie, in honour of her book *The Mysterious Mr Quin*. In my opinion, it’s one of the most peaceful and beautiful places in Puerto de la Cruz, perfect for taking in the sea breeze.

If you enjoy walking, this is where the Coastal Trail (Sendero de la Costa) begins. It leads to some of Tenerife’s best beaches: El Bollullo, Los Patos and El Ancón.

4. Camino de las Cabras

On the way to our next stop, you’ll come across some decorative steps with quotes from Agatha Christie’s books. This path, known as the “Camino de las Cabras” (Goat Path), is one of the prettiest little spots to snap photos in Puerto de la Cruz.

My tip: keep an eye out—there are often people with parrots hanging around the corners trying to sell you photos a bit too insistently.

5. Paseo de Las Palmeras

Paseo de las Palmeras, also known as Paseo de Las Palmas, is one of the loveliest places to see in Puerto de la Cruz.

It’s a straight walkway lined with two rows of grand, old Canarian palm trees that give it its charm. It was opened in 1916 and is part of the Avenida Aguilar y Quesada, one of the city’s best-known streets.

At the end of the path, you’ll arrive at Martiánez Beach, our next stop. And if you’re in the mood for shopping or grabbing a bite, you’re just a short walk from the Las Pirámides de Martiánez shopping centre, which has shops, restaurants and underground parking.

6. Martiánez Beach

Nestled between the Martiánez hillside and Lago Martiánez, this black sand beach is one of the city’s most iconic spots.

It’s a firm favourite among locals and perfect if you’re into surfing. The area near the cliff has great waves and often hosts competitions.

If you’re after something a bit calmer, head to the part of the beach that’s protected by a breakwater, right next to Lago Martiánez. Even so, I’d recommend wearing water shoes and being cautious.

7. Lago Martiánez

Designed by the Lanzarote-born artist César Manrique, Lago Martiánez completely changed tourism in Puerto de la Cruz back in the 1970s. Covering over 100,000 square metres, it’s one of the city’s must-see spots.

Now a protected Cultural Heritage Site, this man-made lake holds around 33,000 square metres of seawater and features several small islands. You’ll also find striking sculptures like Los Alisios and La Jibia.

It’s the perfect place to unwind—very similar to the Maritime Park in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It’s ideal for a full day of sun and chill in a spot with all the services you might need, and at a very reasonable price. It’s easy to lose track of time here—but don’t stay too long, there’s still loads more to discover in Puerto de la Cruz!

Entry Price

  • General admission: €5.50 (includes sunbed)
  • Children under 10: €2.50
  • Discounts available for Puerto de la Cruz residents and multi-use passes.

Opening Hours

  • From 1 to 30 September: 10:00am to 7:00pm
  • Rest of the year: 10:00am to 6:00pm

8. San Telmo Beach and Chapel

The San Telmo Chapel, built in 1780, is a small white church just a few steps from Lago Martiánez, along the coastal path that runs through Puerto de la Cruz.

Inside, you’ll find a wooden coffered ceiling with carved geometric patterns, along with a 17th-century altarpiece featuring an image of San Telmo, the patron saint of sailors.

Located in the square of the same name, the chapel offers one of the best views of San Telmo Beach, which is great for a swim when the tide is low.

9. Church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia

The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia is the most important religious building in Puerto de la Cruz. Found in what you might call the historic centre, it houses the city’s patron saint: the Virgin of Carmen.

Built in 1684 on the site of an older chapel, the church has been extended and renovated over time. In 1898, the bell tower was added—the same one you can admire today from Plaza del Charco, right in front of the entrance.

Inside, highlights include the altarpiece of El Gran Poder de Dios, with paintings by Puerto de la Cruz artist Luis de la Cruz y Ríos, as well as a beautiful 18th-century Baroque main altarpiece.

10. San Felipe Castle

Let’s continue our walking tour around Puerto de la Cruz with a visit to San Felipe Castle.

Built in 1604 to protect the town from pirate attacks, San Felipe Castle is definitely one of those spots you can’t miss. It’s located next to Playa Jardín, and if you sit on the steps by the sea, you’ll enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets in Tenerife.

Over the years, the castle has served as a restaurant, infirmary, and even a shooting club. Nowadays, it’s usually closed, but it hosts cultural events and art exhibitions from time to time.

11. Playa Jardín

Our tour of Puerto de la Cruz ends here. Personally, Playa Jardín is one of my favourite beaches in Tenerife. It’s made up of three parts: Playa del Castillo, Playa del Charcón and Playa de Punta Brava. It’s the perfect place to go for a swim before continuing your island adventure.

What I love most is that it has toilets, beach bars, lifeguards, and sunbeds. Fun fact: if the sky is clear, you can even see Mount Teide in the distance!

2025 update: It’s still one of my favourite areas in Puerto de la Cruz. However, the beaches are currently closed due to environmental issues. Although there are signs along the coast warning visitors, many people still go for a swim. Personally, I’d recommend this spot as one of the most beautiful places to watch the sunset in Tenerife—but I wouldn’t get in the water until it’s safe again.

Here are a few more places you could visit, although they’re not included in this walking route.

12. Taoro Park

If you’ve got a bit more time, don’t miss Taoro Park. It’s located on the hill of the same name and offers one of the best panoramic views of Puerto de la Cruz.

With over 100,000 square metres of space, it’s the perfect place for a walk through gardens, waterfalls, fountains, viewpoints, and winding paths. There are also play areas for kids, a terrace with a restaurant, and the overall atmosphere is calm and peaceful.

The park is divided into three main areas: La Atalaya, home to the Dulce María Loynaz viewpoint; Camino de La Sortija, popular with joggers and walkers; and the Taoro Gardens, ideal for enjoying nature at a slower pace.

There are two historical buildings worth seeing in the park: the old Gran Hotel Taoro, opened in 1890 and once host to famous guests like Agatha Christie, and the Anglican Church.

13. Plaza del Charco

If there’s one place that truly captures the spirit of Puerto de la Cruz, it’s Plaza del Charco. Right in the heart of town, this square has been a meeting point for locals and visitors alike for more than a century. It’s where major celebrations take place, such as the Virgen del Carmen Festivities, Festival Mueca and Carnival.

Its name comes from the saltwater puddles that used to form when waves reached inland from the harbour. Back in the day, people even raised shrimp in them! The square has had a few names over time, but locals have always called it Plaza del Charco.

The square is full of life, surrounded by cafés, restaurants and shops. You’ll find lush greenery, including Canarian palm trees, Indian laurels and a huge elephant ear plant at its centre. There are also kiosks, shaded benches and a children’s play area.

By day, it’s perfect for a rest or a drink outdoors. And by night, the bars and restaurants come alive with live music and street performers—just the place for a laid-back dinner with atmosphere.

14. Loro Parque – A Must-Visit Zoo in Puerto de la Cruz

Loro Parque is one of the top places to visit in Puerto de la Cruz if you’re an animal lover. This zoo is known for its conservation work and breeding programmes for endangered species, and it really stands out for its excellent facilities and animal care.

The park is famous for its shows featuring dolphins, orcas and sea lions. It also has one of the largest aviaries in the world, home to an incredible variety of parrot species. You’ll also find a climate-controlled area for a large penguin colony, a shark tunnel aquarium, and beautifully kept gardens with tropical and exotic plants.

A visit to the park will take you at least 4 to 5 hours. Realistically though, if you ask me, it’s worth spending the whole day. When you arrive, you’ll get a leaflet with a map and the activity schedule, which is really helpful for planning your visit.

If you want to combine it with something else, you could do Loro Parque in the morning and explore the town in the afternoon.

15. La Ranilla Neighbourhood

The La Ranilla neighbourhood is a former fishing district located between Plaza del Charco and Peñón del Fraile. It beautifully blends its maritime roots with a creative, welcoming atmosphere.

Legend has it the name comes from soldier Ruiz Ranilla, the first resident of the area… who knows if it’s true?

These days, La Ranilla has become an open-air art gallery thanks to the Puerto Street Art project. Along its walls you’ll find nearly 20 murals painted by artists from all over the world. The best way to start the walk is at the corner of Calle Mequinez and Pérez Zamora, and then just follow the route I’ve prepared in this post.

But it’s not just urban art—you’ll also find artisan shops, bars and terrace restaurants where you can enjoy some local cuisine. This is also one of the main venues for events like the Mueca Festival and the Periplo Festival.

If you’re on the lookout for hidden corners in Puerto de la Cruz, La Ranilla is a neighbourhood you simply shouldn’t miss.

How to Get to Puerto de la Cruz

Tenerife has two airports, but Tenerife North Airport is much closer to Puerto de la Cruz—just about half an hour by car. So it’s definitely the most convenient option. But don’t worry if you find a good deal flying into Tenerife South—even without a hire car, you can still get to Puerto de la Cruz by bus (called “guaguas” locally). Just make sure to check your arrival time carefully—if you land late at night, connections may be limited.
Without a doubt, the best way to get around the island is by hiring a car. It gives you total freedom without depending on bus timetables. You’ll find car hire offices both at the airport and in the port. The company I always use—and the one that works best in the Canary Islands—is CICAR.
If you don’t want to drive or don’t have a licence, no worries—you can always get around by Titsa buses (guaguas). Bus number 30 will take you to the Puerto de la Cruz bus station in just over 30 minutes. From there, you’ve got plenty of options to explore the island. I’d recommend downloading the Titsa App to check routes and timetables on the go.
