1. Plaza de España

Start your day at Plaza de España. Built in 1929 over the old Castillo de San Cristóbal, it’s the largest square in all the Canary Islands.

Right in the middle, there’s a big seawater lake — perfect for catching one of the best sunsets in town. You’ll also spot the famous city letters, the monument to the fallen, and a tower shaped like a cross.

Fun fact: this square is the main meeting point for free walking tours around the city.

2. Plaza de la Candelaria

Plaza de la Candelaria is one of the most important spots in the city centre, located just next to Plaza de España. It dates back to the 16th century, when it served as the parade ground for the old Castillo de San Cristóbal. But it wasn’t until the 18th century that it became a proper public square.

Over the years, it’s gone by several different names: Plaza del Castillo, Plaza Real, Plaza de la Constitución, and Plaza de la Pila – the last one thanks to a fountain that once provided fresh water to both locals and ships arriving at the port. That fountain was actually the first decorative feature in a public space in Santa Cruz. In 1956, the square got its current name in honour of the Virgin of Candelaria, patron saint of Tenerife and the Canary Islands.

In the centre of the square, you’ll find the Triunfo de la Candelaria monument, a beautiful marble sculpture made in Genoa that represents the appearance of the Virgin and the conversion of the Guanche menceyes (kings).

3. Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción

Built in 1499 on the site of the very first chapel the Spanish conquerors raised in Tenerife, the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción stands out for its tall tower — visible from all over the city — and its lovely façade with traditional Canary pinewood balconies.

Inside, you’ll find the impressive main altar, which includes the Cruz de la Conquista (Conquest Cross) — the symbol that gave the city its name.

This space has hosted works by major artists like Dalí, Picasso, Man Ray, Penrose, Patti Smith and Tàpies. It also pays special attention to the work of local artist Óscar Domínguez, one of the key figures in Spanish surrealism.

Locally known as “La Recova”, the Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África first opened its doors in 1944. Built in a neo-colonial style, it’s named after the Virgin of Africa.

At the entrance, you’ll spot a statue of the Virgin placed opposite the Virgin of Candelaria, patron saint of the Canary Islands.

Today, it’s the most popular market in the city. Come by to explore the colourful stalls and discover tropical fruits and flavours you won’t easily find on the mainland.

7. Teatro Guimerá

The Teatro Guimerá is the oldest theatre in the Canary Islands, opened in 1851. It’s located in Plaza Isla de la Madera and was built on the ruins of a former Dominican convent that was demolished after the Mendizábal disentailment during the reign of Queen Isabella II. In fact, for many years it was known as “Teatro Isabel II”, and you can still spot that name on the building’s façade.

Designed in 1849 by Manuel de Oraá in a romantic classicist style, the theatre was renamed after the writer, poet and playwright Ángel Guimerá following his death in 1923. Although its interior was fully renovated in 1911, the theatre remains a key hub for the performing arts in the city, alongside the Auditorio.

One of the most eye-catching features is the sculpture “Per Adriano”, a female face located right in front of the theatre. It was part of the first International Street Sculpture Exhibition. If you want to see inside, you’ll need to catch a performance!

8. Plaza del Chicharro

Continuing our route around Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Plaza del Chicharro is one of the most visited squares in the city.

Its name comes from a bronze sculpture placed here in 1979 in honour of the chicharro (horse mackerel), a fish that used to be a staple food for the humble fishing community of old Santa Cruz.

Fun fact: the nickname “chicharreros” was once used — not so kindly — by people from La Laguna to refer to the capital’s locals. These days, it’s worn with pride!

9. Plaza del Príncipe de Asturias

Plaza del Príncipe de Asturias was designed in 1857 by Manuel de Oraá y Arcocha. It was built on the site of the former orchard of the now-vanished Convent of San Pedro de Alcántara.

Inaugurated in 1860 in honour of Alfonso XII — who was the Prince of Asturias at the time — the square is best known for its elegant central bandstand, added in 1929, and surrounded by Indian laurels.

It also features two Genoese statues representing Spring and Summer.

10. Parque García Sanabria

Declared a Site of Cultural Interest, Parque García Sanabria is the largest urban park in the Canary Islands and one of the best free things to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

On Calle del Pilar you’ll find the famous Flower Clock, made in Switzerland and gifted to the city by the Danish consul in 1958.

The park is full of fountains and statues. And if you visit at night, you’ll see the names of famous artists from around the world beautifully lit up.

It’s without a doubt one of the most beautiful parks to visit in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

11. Plaza Weyler

Plaza Weyler, built in 1893 as the forecourt to the Capitanía General building, is one of the city’s main meeting spots.

At its centre, there’s a white Carrara marble fountain with neo-Renaissance details.

It’s a busy square thanks to its location between Calle del Castillo and the shopping area along Rambla Pulido. It’s also a tram stop, so it’s super easy to reach.

12. Casa del Carnaval

The Tenerife Carnival is one of the most famous in the world — second only to Rio de Janeiro.

In this museum dedicated to the carnival, you can see all kinds of carnival costumes on display, including the spectacular outfit worn by the Carnival Queen.

A quirky fact: during Franco’s dictatorship, the Carnival had to be called the Winter Festival to avoid censorship.

17. Playa de Las Teresitas

Playa de Las Teresitas, located in the village of San Andrés, is the most beautiful beach in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Just 9 km from the city centre (about a 20-minute drive), this beach stands out thanks to its golden sand — brought in from the Sahara Desert to cover the original black volcanic sand. A breakwater keeps the waves calm, making it perfect for a day out with kids.

Las Teresitas has all the facilities you might need — showers, lifeguards, and easy access for people with reduced mobility. It’s a favourite with locals, so it’s best to get there early, especially during weekends or peak season. You can drive there (there’s plenty of parking), or hop on a guagua (bus) from the main city bus station.

How to Get to Santa Cruz de Tenerife

There are two airports in Tenerife, but Tenerife North Airport is much closer to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, so it’s definitely the best option. A taxi from North Airport to Santa Cruz should cost around €16.

That said, don’t worry if you find a great deal to fly into Tenerife South. Even if you’re not hiring a car, you can easily get to Santa Cruz de Tenerife by guagua (bus). Just make sure to check your arrival time — if you land late at night, connections can be limited, and a taxi from South Airport to Santa Cruz costs around €100.

Without a doubt, the best way to get around the island is by hiring a car — it gives you the freedom to explore without relying on bus timetables. You’ll find car rental offices both at the airport and in the port. The car hire company I always use — and that works really well in the Canary Islands — is CICAR.

If you don’t drive or don’t have a licence, you can always rely on the guaguas (buses) run by Titsa. Hop on the number 20 from North Airport and it’ll take you to the Santa Cruz bus station in just over 30 minutes. From there, you’ll have plenty of options to explore the island. I recommend downloading the Titsa App to check all the routes and timetables.
